PROJECT NAME
Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), at The John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle
LOCATION
Sydney, Australia
The major objective of the environmental graphics for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit was to deliver an innovative, functional and family friendly facility in line with the salutogenic model; concerned with the relationship between health, stress and coping. The design needed to be culturally inclusive of Aboriginal families.
The design outcome was influenced by recurring patterns found in Aboriginal art, and microscopic images of cells which, at times, recall the drawings of children. The wave-like dot pattern flows along the great expanse of glazed surfaces, inspired by the Aboriginal Dreamtime story ‘The Rainbow Serpent.’
